Creating a New Blog
Whenever you start the process of creating a new blog (whether it is your first blog or a subsequent one), blogger.com would send you a web page as shown below. The step would be shown as the second step even if you are creating your second or subsequent blog.
If you are creating the new blog immediately after having created a user account this would naturally be the second step (the first being creation of the user account) in the blog creation process.
• How many blogs for a User Account?
You can create as many blogs as you want using a user account.
• Web Form for filling Title & Url for your blog
The web page contains a web form with three text boxes with label to their left identifying the kind of data to be filled in each box.
It also contains a "Continue" link which works as a form control to submit data that is filled.
Blog's Identity » Blog Title
When we see a blog displayed in a browser, we see a few words displayed in large text (generally at the top of the web page) indicating the content within the blog.
This forms the visual identity to the blog and is called its title. It is a expression of the content within your blog in brief.
Wherever a mention of your blog appears (within blogger.com and blogspot.com), the title text would form the identity for your blog. Title is like a heading for the blog. Thus, use Title Case (Capital Letters for the First Letter of each word) for a better looking title.
The text that you enter in the text box with the label "Blog Title" to its left, would appear as the title for your blog.
• How Long can the Title be?
The text box (a control in a web form) may have a restriction with regard to the maximum number of characters that can be entered in it as well as the kind of characters that can be entered in it. In the above web form, the text box control for entering "Blog Title" has a maximum 50 characters (with spaces) limitation.
However the form on the web page that allows you to modify the title text for your blog has a maximum of 90 characters (with spaces) limitation. If you want a title longer than 50 characters, use a shorter one here and then modify it to the one you want later on by changing the settings relating to the blog.
However, in setting a title for your blog you should also consider the final format in which the title is displayed on your blog.
Blog's Identity » Blog URI/URL
Every blog is a web page. Every web page that is accessible on a computer connected to the internet has a unique identity.
The URI/URL is the blogs unique identity that enables the computers on the internet access it. No two web pages will have the same identity. Two or more blogs may have the same title, but not the same URI/URL.
Thus, a web page's technical identity is what we call a URI (Universal Resource Indicator). In most cases URI and URL (Uniform Resource Locator) are synonymously used, though they are different.
For the present just understand that all URL's are URI's.
• URL » Your Blogs Web Address
For passing on information relating to your blog to others, you give them your blog's URL/URI. This is the address that a reader types into the address bar of the web browser to access your blog.
Your url would look something like "__.blogspot.com". The "__" being a combination of characters, letters, numbers, underscore and hyphen with the limitation that "the combination that you use" is not in use already by someone else using blogspot.com to host their blog. The url should start with a character or a number.
Choose a url that is creative, meaningful and catchy. Something that gets into the mind and stays there for anyone who comes to know of it.
Some Titles and their urls to help you get an idea
• How Long can the Url be
The text box control on this form where you enter text that forms the url for your blog has a maximum of 37 characters limitation (there cannot be spaces between characters in a url). The form on the web page that allows you to modify the url for your blog does not have any restriction with regard to the maximum number of characters that you can enter. However, blogger has a maximum of 37 characters limitation for the url. This is a limit set by the blogger program and is not a limit that is applicable everywhere on the internet.
• English only
The letters used in the url should be of english languages only.
There are computer programs which can create blogs and make postings in them automatically. These programs may create innumerable number of blogs may and post/fill them with unsolicited content. On account of this blogspot.com may get loaded with many unacceptable/unnecessary pages.
Spam is something that gets into our area without our consent and which is unacceptable to us. The act of filling up our place with such content is what is called spamming.
To combat spam many web sites use captcha.
The advanced settings are for those who have a web site and hosting space available and want to store the blog pages on their server.
We submit the information filled on the form by clicking the "Continue" link. If the information you submitted is proper, the blogger program would send you the web page relating to the next step in the blog creation process i.e. choosing a template for the blog. If that page is received, you can be sure that your blog with the url and title you chose has been created.
If you quit at this step for any reason, you can always find your blog listed on the dashboard. You can login to your user account and access the blog pages.
A blogs description appears at the top of the page just below the title. It is gives a brief explanation of the blog.
There is no provision to include description for your blog at the time of creating it.
Generally, for all the templates provided by blogger, title and description are formatted to appear in their own container.
To add or change the description for your blog, you need to access the blog settings. The option to change the description is within the "basic" sub group of the "settings" group.
The description is normally plain text. Mostly a single paragraph of text that explains the nature of content in the blog. You cannot use HTML tags to format the text. However, you may use the HTML code for inserting an image along with the description. This has a 500 character limit including spaces and the HTML code that you insert.
• Using text in Other Languages
You can use any language recognised by the utf-8 (unicode transformation format) character set. Care should be taken while using languages involving complex fonts as each letter in those cases is formed by two or more characters many a times. Thus 500 characters cannot be understood as 500 letters in those cases.
Blog Settings :: Change, Save
The various options relating to a blog are grouped under three main groups postings, settings and template. The options within each group are placed within a number of sub groups. Links to groups are available on the top row of web pages which are used for creating/editing posts, changing settings etc.
Clicking the link relating to a group would bring the first web page relating to a sub group within that group and display a list of links on the second row for accessing the other sub group web pages within that group.
• Saving the Changes made
Whenever you change the settings you need to save them to make them effective.
Use the button that you find towards the end of each sub group page. A success message is displayed at the top after your changes have been saved.
We choose a title for the blog at the time of creating it. This can be subsequently changed at any time.
The text box on the web form used for changing the title allows you to set a title 90 characters long (including spaces).
• Using text in Other Languages
You can use any language recognised by the utf-8 character set. Care should be taken while using languages involving complex fonts as each letter in those cases is formed by two or more characters many a times. Thus 90 characters cannot be understood as 90 letters in those cases.
Editing Page Elements to Change Title/Description
If you are using the "Modern Template" for your blog, the blog is divided into a number of small parts, each holding a certain part of the blog content. Each part is called a widget. You can make some widgets to either appear or not appear on the blog by showing/hiding them. You can reposition some widgets in total. For some widgets you can edit the content.
For some widgets there are a number of sub components which can be repositioned, shown/hidden and their content changed.
The title and description are placed within a widget called "Header". It is a widget that cannot be removed but whose content can be edited. The template in the widget form can be accessed from the "Page Elements" sub group within the "Templates" group.
The "Header" widget has an "Edit" link towards the right end. Click on it to pop up the "Configure Header" web page containing the title and description text. Make changes and save them on the window.
Once the changes are saved, the window closes automatically.
We choose a URL for the blog at the time of creating the blog. This can also be changed subsequently.
The URL change being described here would be relevant only if you are hosting your blog on blogspot.com. Moreover, you would be able to change only a part of the url that would be ending with blogspot.com (and not the complete url) whereby your url would read yourchoice.blogspot.com.
The options for changing the URL are available on the "publishing" sub group page of the "Settings" group.
There is no provision for checking the url availability straight away from the web page. You can change the url by replacing the existing word and saving the page. If the url you are choosing is not available, the web page would be returned with an error message included. If it is available, the page would be returned with a messaged indicating that the changes have been saved successfully.
Deleting a Blog
The options for changing the URL are available on the "Basic" sub group page of the "Settings" group.
• Avoid Deleting
Deleting a blog amounts to deleting the total content relating to the blog. The blog page, posts, comments, backlinks, member permissions etc. However, if you have hosted your blog on your own server using the advanced ftp options, the content that has already been uploaded to your server would not be deleted. If you intend you may have to delete that manually.
The images and videos uploaded through the blog post creating page in blogger are capable of being used in all the blogs. The images are uploaded to photos.blogger.com or some other site, the videos are uploaded to videos.google.com. Thus, if you intend to use the images and vide0s already used within the blog you may have to manually collect the urls of them and store them separately for use when needed. Such a collection can be made using the blog feed (complete) also.
A better alternative would be to change the url of the blog instead of deleting it and/or restricting the access by making it private.
There is no way you can recover a deleted blog.
